Easter Island Currency Since Easter Island belongs to Chile, it observes all of the rules, regulations, and government and societal structure of that country. (even though most islanders do not enjoy this position.) The currency is the Peso (Chilean$) and notes are in denominations of Chilean$10000, 5000,1000, and 500. Coins are in denominations of Chilean$ 100, 50, 10, 5, and 1. Foreign exchange transactions take place at banks and some authorized restaurants, hotels, etc. (in Santiago). Contrary to rumor, the US dollar is widely accepted on Easter Island. It is not recommended to use credit cards on the island. Only a handful will accept it at all, and they will attach a hefty charge on it because of the length of time they have to wait to get their money from Chile.
